The Smena aesthetic is derived from a fascination with the natural qualities of leather, providing inspiration through its unique properties and texture. We source the most luxurious leathers from around the world and in the search for various leathers, our designs are born. It could be the texture, color or treatment to the leather that first inspires a bag. Searching through piles of leather, hunting out beautiful hides, touching, feeling, smelling is all part of the process that we love. Materials and leather have always been our inspiration, and once again it was the chosen leather that inspired the latest collection.  Kangaroo leather is one of the strongest in the world. It has beautiful qualities that are enhanced with time. It can be tanned in various ways including vegetable tanning and chrome tanning that will give the kangaroo leather a different finish.
Travels abroad to Macedonia, London, Europe and Asia keep our craving for new experiences alive. Our focus on attention to detail comes from our love and passion for jewellery and gems.

Inspiration is also drawn from the natural landscape that surrounds us, architecture, furniture and design objects. Whether it is working in the studio in Eltham amongst the Christmas Tree farm, wandering around the laneways of Melbourne city, traveling interstate or surfing the net, inspiration is drawn from all things beautiful. The wonderful experiences of everyday life create the motivation for new designs, sometimes in the most random of ways.
